Data Analysis and Engineering intern - RIPE ATLAS

Focus on RIPE Atlas Measurements

Hybrid: From home and our office at Amsterdam Central Station

Internship allowance: 750 EUR per month 

Full-time: 37.5 hours per week (working part-time is also possible) 

Desired start date: February 2025 

IMPORTANT: You should be enrolled with an education institution in the Netherlands 

The RIPE NCC runs RIPE Atlas: one of the largest Internet measurement platforms in the world. In this project you will research and build a prototype on how to design smarter measurements for RIPE Atlas, using an instrumented DNS server. We do this in collaboration with IIJ research in Tokyo (Japan), and upon excellent execution of this project, a summer internship at IIJ could be an option. The ideal candidate is proficient in python programming, understands DNS and Internet measurements (ping, traceroute), and is interested in DataOps and data analytics. If you are passionate about Internet measurements and want to learn more about how it works from one of the five Regional Internet Registries, then we would love to hear from you. 

🧠 What you will be doing: 

• Implement extensions to the DNS-Ninja code so it stores state that can be efficiently retrieved (parquet files, or maybe you know something better?)

• Write code to analyse RIPE Atlas results, so this can feed back into the DNS-Ninja

• Write logic for the DNS-Ninja so it can take additional inputs (previous two points)

👀 What We're Looking For:

• Proficiency in Python

• Interest in exploring technologies for efficient data storage and exploration

• Interest in data analytics

• A basic understanding of Internet protocols and troubleshooting: DNS, traceroute, ping

We would also appreciate:

• An interest in data analytics and visualisation, so you can analyse the impact of doing RIPE Atlas measurements smarter in terms of efficiency, data quality improvements and reduced disk storage

• Initiative and independence in executing this project

👥 The Research  Department

In the Research Department at the RIPE NCC we explore Internet measurement data and how we can extract insights from it. As an example we look at Internet outages and the extent to which we can measure them with RIPE Atlas and RIPE RIS. We publish analyses on RIPE Labs about this (example: Baltic Sea Cable Cuts analysis) and we present about our work at conferences (example: RPKI flutter).
